If you want to visit Portugal and catch some epic waves with the rest of the surfers from the surf camp in Peniche, the best part of the year is just around the corner. Whether you’re planning to catch your first wave or you already surf on a more advanced level, the whole fall period is an ideal time for surfing in Portugal. The month which especially stands out in terms of quality is October, due to the combination of the best waves, sunny and warm weather and one of the world’s most popular surfing events. At that time, the ocean awakens and the first groundswells are arriving slowly after the summer break. Beside that it is a season of nice offshore winds which make waves even better and that positively affects on the mood of all surfers on the beach.
Rip Curl Pro Portugal has been held in Peniche for the first time in 2009, which was unseen spectacle at that time. Rip Curl Search was the only World Championship Tour contest until then which had permission to constantly change its location in search of the perfect waves, and the idea came from the Rip Curl’s statement “Live the search” as the main sponsor of this event. Due to the excellent conditions and unforgettable finals, contest had great success and Rip Curl Pro Portugal was included in the calendar as a permanent location. Since then, it is regularly held during the October in Peniche, practically in front of our surf house.
Rip Curl Pro Portugal is the only opportunity in Europe beside Hossegor in France to watch world’s best surfers live in the world champion race for the title. You can watch World Tour from 20th to 31st of October live with us at Supertubos if you join us at one of the last two weeks of surf camp in Portugal and this top surfing event takes place only 15 minutes of walk from Kohola surf house.
Supertubos is fast beachbreak wave on a sandy bottom that offers both left and right tubes, and it is sometimes named as European Pipeline (the most famous wave in Hawaii). Peniche and its surroundings offer an inexhaustible source of waves, from more demanding ones that explode at Supertubos where barrels can reach up to 4 meters in height to the small beginner waves that can be found in the bay of Baleal beach.
Portuguese people are generally big fans of sports, so they gather every year beside thousands of foreign surfers and surfing fans from all around the world who are coming to Peniche to watch this event live. At this time night life in the town is on fire and beach bars are constantly organising parties and various events.
As every year so far, there was no shortage of excitement during the last years competition. From unexpected changes of the locations where event was held due to the most favourable conditions of wind and waves, to the final heats and John John Florence’s historical win which secured his first title of the world champion.
Even surfers who compete on this contest love special and relaxed local atmosphere in Peniche, so they use every opportunity to enjoy the beauties of this place and surrounding area. It will rarely happen somewhere else that John John sits to eat a burger next to you while you are drinking coffee at a local cafe or that Gabriel Medina or Jeremy Flores show up and ride a couple of nice ones when you are surfing at the usual spot where surf school is taking place, while Matt Wilkinson is always part of inventory during the night events.
Rip Curl Pro is not the only thing which this area has to offer, so it is going to be great choice for all those who want to explore natural and cultural beauties of traditional Portugal, gastronomic delights, relax on the beach, make new friendships, have good times and return back home richer for an unforgettable experience.
