Rip Curl Pro Portugal 2019.
If you want to visit Portugal, catch some epic waves and improve your surfing skills in Peniche, the best part of the year is just around the corner. Whether you’re planning to catch your first green wave or you already surf on a more advanced level, the whole fall is an ideal time for surfing in Portugal. The month which especially stands out in terms of quality is October, due to the combination of the best waves, sunny and warm weather and one of the world’s most popular surfing events. At that time, the ocean awakens and the first groundswells arrive slowly after the summer break. Beside that it is a season of nice offshore winds which make waves even better which boosts mood of surfers of all levels.
Rip Curl Pro Portugal has been held in Peniche for the first time in 2009, which was unseen spectacle at that time in the country. Rip Curl Search was the only World Championship Tour contest until then which had permission to constantly change its location in search of the perfect waves, and the idea came from the Rip Curl’s statement “Live the search” as the main sponsor of this event. Due to the excellent conditions and unforgettable finals, contest had great success and Rip Curl Pro Portugal was included in the calendar as a permanent location. Since then, it is regularly held during the October in Peniche, practically in front of our surf house.
Beside Hossegor in France, Rip Curl Pro Portugal is the only opportunity in Europe to watch world’s best surfers live in the world champion race for the title. You can watch World Tour from 16th to 28th of October live with us at Supertubos if you join us at one of the last two weeks of surf camp in Portugal and this top surfing event takes place only 15 minutes of walk from Kohola surf house.
Supertubos is fast beach break wave on a sandy bottom that offers both left and right tubes, it is one of the most famous European waves and it is often named as European Pipeline (the most famous wave in Hawaii). Peniche and its surroundings offer an inexhaustible source of waves, from more demanding ones that explode at Supertubos where barrels can reach up to 4-5 meters in height to the small beginner waves that can be found in the bay of Baleal beach.
Surfers who compete on this contest love special and relaxed local atmosphere in Peniche, so they use every opportunity to enjoy the beauties of this place and surrounding area. It will rarely happen somewhere else that John John sits to eat lunch next to you while you are drinking coffee at a local cafe or that Gabriel Medina or Jeremy Flores show up and ride a couple of nice ones when you are surfing at the usual spot where surf school is taking place, while Matt Wilkinson is always part of inventory during the night events.
Portuguese people are generally big fans of sports, so they gather every year beside thousands of foreign surfers and surfing fans from all around the world who are coming to Peniche to watch this event live. At this time night life in the town is on fire and beach bars are constantly organising parties and various events.
Rip Curl Pro is not the only thing which this area has to offer, so it is going to be great choice for all those who want to explore natural and cultural beauties of traditional Portugal, gastronomic delights, relax on the beach, make new friendships, have good times and return back home richer for an unforgettable experience.
